Infrastructure Specialist

Starting Salary Range: $63,000 - $81,000

Role Summary

Provides design, implementation, consulting and support services for the enterprise network routing and switching devices, server hardware and software platforms.  Provides recommendations for business process improvements, systems analysis, system compatibility testing and software/hardware systems installations. Provides software/hardware support by maintaining, patching, upgrading and troubleshooting the enterprise network  platforms. 

Works closely with all teams in the IT department  to provide continuous improvement, development, design, implementation, and maintenance of systems that service all City  customers. Maintains the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Responsible for assisting  Information Technology department management in planning, organizing and conducting detailed business cases that define problems and opportunities, identify deficiencies and deliver improvements that impact the enterprise's operational efficiency and effectiveness as it relates to technology utilization.

Utilizes the IT department Project Delivery Methodology to deliver successful, on-time, and on-budget projects to the Enterprise. Able to work with all levels of City employee and vendors. Strives to achieve the IT Department and City mission, vision, goals, and objectives.

Essential Duties:

Incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Independently and proactively, evaluate, design, recommend, install, test, support and maintain enterprise system hardware and software configurations while adhering to city and IT department best practices, standards, strategies, policies and procedures. .
  • Review, recommend, design, implement and enforce enterprise security on all platforms.
  • Lead and assist in developing standards, strategies, policies and procedures and related documentation.
  • Maintain and develop standards, procedures, techniques, and tools.
  • Participate in department and cross-functional quality activities as needed to improve work processes or improve customer-vendor relationships.
  • Respond, utilize, and keep up-to-date service request and incidents in the IT department Service Management System.
  • Respond to Help Desk requests, train and assist users with system related problems.
  • Provide escalation assistance to Help Desk or assist other Information Technology staff as required.
  • Communicate all relevant information effectively, on hardware and software recommendations, evaluations, installations and upgrades to all staff whose activities or assignments may be impacted.
  • Provide training and documentation and assist other managers in developing technical training to meet department needs.

  • On-call on a rotating basis with other staff members.

  • BGP, OSPF, MPLS, EAPS (Extreme), TCP/IP, VPN's, Firewalls, DNS, Unified Communications
  • Firewalls
  • Wireless LAN controllers and wireless concepts
  • Network Management platforms, SNMP, traffic management, capacity planning, network troubleshooting and network tuning
  • Networking Hardware: Extreme Networks, Juniper Networks, Palo Alto and Cisco solutions
    • Server hardware: Wintel
    • Operating systems software: AIX, Linux, VMware vSphere 5.5/6.0/6.5, and Windows Server 2008 R2/2012 R2/2016
    • Enterprise software: Microsoft Active Directory Services, Microsoft Exchange 2010/2013/2016, SQL Server 2000/2008 R2/2012 R2/2014/2016.
    • Scripting languages or tools (e.g., Java, PowerShell, VBScript).
  • Core competency in either Systems or Network Administration

Education and Experience


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience in the information technology field
  • At least three years demonstrated experience in network/systems support or similar experience
  • Knowledge of enterprise computer hardware and software
  • Valid Driver's License

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
