Master Mechanic

 (Internal Title: Vehicle and Equipment Technician IV)

Pay Rate Information

This position is represented by the AFSCME union and starting pay is $24.58/hour. This position is eligible for step pay increases and potential progression increases. Role Summary

To diagnose, maintain and repair City operated vehicles and equipment.

Duties

Incumbent may be responsible for the following duties, listed in order of frequency and importance:

Essential Duties

Repairing and maintaining City vehicles; fabricating vehicle components and features for City use; and diagnosing problems with City vehicles.

Related Work

Preparing and completing necessary paperwork on all completed repair orders; and performing related duties as assigned.

  • Large engine automotive repair practices
  • Computer software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office and MainSaver)
  • Electronic diagnostic equipment
  • Basic mechanical principles
  • Safety precautions relating to mechanical repair
  • Safety precautions relating to hazardous substances
  • Safety precautions relating to automotive repair
  • Welding/fabrication procedures
  • Electrical repair

Skills (position requirements)

  • Communicating though oral and written instruction
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public
  • Reading and interpreting technical manuals
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems

Equipment

Miscellaneous hand tools and equipment (employee in this role must provide hand tools), miscellaneous office equipment, welding tools, hoists, computer and diagnostic tools.

Training and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Proficiency in welding/fabrication (welding/fabrication testing will be administered during the interview process for this position)

Licensing Requirements

  • Valid driver's license; CDL B license with airbrake endorsement (within 90 days of hire date)
  • State of Michigan Master Mechanic licensing, in either Automobile/Light Truck or Heavy-Duty Truck Repair
  • Certification in one or more of the following specialties:
    • Hydraulics
    • Water systems
    • CNG engines and fuel systems
    • Small engine/light equipment
    • Heavy equipment
    • Heavy Truck Transmission
    • Fire Apparatus

Physical Requirements

The physical ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, crawl, climb, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp and perform repetitive motions.  The work requires the ability to operate hand and foot controls on machinery and equipment.

Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions (i.e., confined spaces, heights, mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.), poor atmospheric conditions (i.e., fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation), inadequate lighting, and intense noise. 

The work often involves the ability to perform routine moderate lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. and occasional heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. 

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
