Fire Prevention



Essential Duties:


This position will provide administrative support for the Fire Prevention Bureau and may be assigned the following activities/responsibility:

  • Maintain all electric and hard copy documents handled within the Fire Prevention and Fire Training divisions
  • Field telephone calls and direct or answer questions appropriately
  • Assist in scheduling public education events
  • Assist in scheduling inspections
  • Assist in scheduling water flow tests
  • Organize and assist in filling and updating training data
  • Greet and assist visitors
  • Manage and create word processing documents
  • File and Fax documentation
  • Manage Firefighter Right To Know data and Emergency Hazard Site data within a third party, State of Michigan software package
  • Mail inspection reports and violations
  • Invoice inspections
  • Organize and deploy mail for the Fire Prevention Bureau
  • Assist with specific programs and projects as directed including special community events
  • May be asked to assist and fill in as the Fire Department's Management Assistant


Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree
  • At least 2 years of proven administrative support with experience in all general office procedures and practices
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and accuracy; demonstrate outstanding customer service; demonstrate well-developed organizational and time management skills, demonstrate clear, concise verbal and written communication; office information technology; coordinate multiple duties; meet deadlines under pressure timely and accurately
  • Must have previous timekeeping and payables experience
  • Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher, Power Point (Candidate will be tested)
  • Able to successfully complete a thorough criminal background check


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Previous experience working within a fire department or fire prevention

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Move and lift light objects less than 20 pounds such as mail, files and supplies. Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements. The ability to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
