Public Works Supervisor

(This position will work primarily with the Sanitary division)

Pay Rate Information

This position is represented by the Teamsters union and starting pay is $29.72/hour. This position is eligible for step pay increases and potential progression increases. Please reference the Teamsters' collective bargaining agreement located at: 

Job progressions serve as a way for union employees to demonstrate additional technical competencies, knowledge and skills to enhance their benefit to the City.  The progression allows employees to enhance their job responsibilities and pay through demonstration of increased competencies.

Role Summary

To develop, facilitate and assist Public Works employees in operating, maintaining, inspecting, installing and repairing the City's infrastructure (Communications, Signs and Signals, Forestry, Grounds and Facility Maintenance, Water Distribution, Sewer Systems, Street Maintenance and the collection of Solid Waste)

Essential Duties

Supervising, facilitating and managing the professional development, training needs and performance of Public Works employees; certifying technical proficiencies of Public Work's personnel; managing employee training, development and progression to accomplish career advancement; managing personnel, which includes assisting in planning, organizing and facilitating work assignments, training, inspection follow-up, mentoring, hiring and separating regular and seasonal employees, conducting performance evaluations and issuing discipline; providing technical oversight of work to ensure work meets established and regulatory standards; enabling and providing leadership for self-direction and teamwork.

Enforcing City and Service Area work rules; ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements; developing and administering internal or coordinating external training and testing; interacting with the public and addressing concerns and identified problems; ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations for hazardous materials; ensuring the safe and proper use of various hand tools, power tools, test instruments and heavy equipment; ensuring proper safety practices for confined space entry, storing, handling and transporting gases and chemicals are followed; ensuring the proper use of correct lock-out and tag-out procedures; completing work process documentation; performing data collection and report generation; and performing related work as assigned.

Training, Experience and Licensing


  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Field experience
  • Experience as a team leader and/or supervisor
  • Ability to be flexible with scheduling, including night shift when needed/required. Overtime may be required in this role.
  • Excellent customer service/communication skills
  • Valid Driver's License


  • Experience with purchasing and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
  • S-1 Water Operator License
  • Utilities experience

Physical Requirements

Fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions (i.e., confined spaces, heights, mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.), poor atmospheric conditions (i.e., fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation), extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and intense noise.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
